About The 2010 Dinner:
On February 10th, The Alliance's 17th Annual Dinner raised an astonishing $1 million to continue providing free legal services for impoverished children and youth in Los Angeles. It has never been more difficult to raise funds, but due to the serious budget crisis, the need for advocacy for our at-risk kids is greater than ever; The Alliance thanks everyone who supported the event so generously. Law & Order’s Sam Waterston gave a moving presentation of the Champion for Children award to the franchise’s creators and executives, Dick Wolf, René Balcer, Walon Green, Neal Baer, Arthur Forney and Peter Jankwoski.
Dick, a long-term Alliance supporter along with wife, Noelle, a member of The Alliance board of directors, reminded the room that during a crisis like the one our state is facing, the first programs to be cut are services for the poor, education, and children’s welfare. It is thus extremely critical that individuals, companies and law firms step up and give what they possibly can to ensure the continuation and quality of the critical service The Alliance provides to L.A.’s most vulnerable children. Brenda Hampton, creator/executive producer of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, graciously accepted the Francis M. Wheat Community Service award for her courageous and honest treatment of issues like teen pregnancy, at-risk youth and family. Brenda, the adoptive mother of three children, is a child advocate both on and off the job.
Special guest speakers included attorney Shannon Alexander of NBC Universal, who represented, on a pro bono basis, a special needs child at a hearing for foster care services,Sex & The City’s Willie Garson, who recently adopted an 8-year old son from L.A. foster care, and actress Angie Harmon, long-time Alliance board member and friend. The Alliance’s own Youth Council of former foster youth along with the charming cast of The Secret Life of The American Teenager gave the night a youthful energy.
The Alliance deepest gratitude extends to Dinner Chair Cliff Gilbert-Lurie, whose tireless efforts year after year make this event such a success. Special thanks to Cliff’s incredible Dinner Committee, Pam Golum, Andrea Hartman, Craig Hunegs, Gwyn Lurie, Sue Naegle, Sean Perry, and Noelle Wolf for their heart and commitment.
