Adoptions from Foster Care

The Alliance provides free legal services to families adopting from the foster care system. We also provide advocacy to ensure that each adopted child receives post-adoption benefits and services appropriate to their needs so they can continue to thrive.

The Alliance finalizes one-third of all adoptions out of foster care in Los Angeles County for children and young adults who often have waited years for a permanent home. We also created National Adoption Day, now celebrated in all 50 states, and we are the only non-profit organization in Los Angeles County that finalizes adoptions of youth who are 18 or older and in extended foster care.

How do we do it:

We cut through mountains of red tape by working closely with the Los Angeles Children’s Court, the Department of Children and Family Services and the attorneys who represent children in foster care. These partnerships help remove barriers in individual cases and have led to policy reform on a county level. Our dedicated cadre of pro bono attorneys extends our reach and has enabled us to complete more than 14,000 adoptions in our history.

Many adoptions are finalized through Adoption Day events, including National Adoption Day, which was started by the Alliance and has now been adopted as a model in all 50 states.
