Building a Strong SSI Application for TAY

28/10/20209:30am PDT2 hours
This training for DCFS staff will focus on how to build a strong Supplemental Security Income (SSI) application for transition age youth (TAY) to ensure continued supportive benefits, including reviewing recommended steps for preparing the application packet and completing the necessary Social Security Administration forms for non-minor dependents. The training also will provide background information about SSI benefits for TAY, discussing the screening process, SSI eligibility requirements, and why SSI is a critical benefit for TAY with disabilities.

The webinar featured a refresher on the basics of FFPSA along with a deeper dive into the eligible populations ("candidates for care") and how the law impacts older youth and expected and parenting youth in foster care.

Updates were provided on key implementation issues arising in other states around the country as well as the impacts of follow up federal legislation including the Family First Transition Act and the emergency and stimulus bills passed by Congress this year.
